Universities, boards, and academic institutions across India are increasingly issuing digitally signed marksheets, transcripts, and degree certificates. These documents โ delivered as PDFs โ carry a cryptographic digital signature that proves the document is authentic and has not been altered. For students applying to foreign universities, jobs abroad, or even domestic employers who demand verified academic credentials, understanding and verifying these signatures is now essential.
The two primary ecosystems for digitally signed academic documents in India are the National Academic Depository (NAD) and DigiLocker. Both use government-backed Certifying Authorities (CAs) to sign documents, and both are legally recognised under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
The National Academic Depository (NAD) is a national storehouse of all academic awards digitised and issued by academic institutions, boards, and eligibility agencies in India. It was set up by the Ministry of Education and is operated under the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Institutions such as IITs, NITs, central universities, CBSE, ICSE, and hundreds of state universities upload their awarded degrees, diplomas, and marksheets to NAD in digitally signed form.
When you download your marksheet or degree certificate from NAD, it is a PDF with an embedded digital signature from the issuing institution's DSC or from NAD's signing authority. This signature confirms that the document was issued by the stated institution and has not been tampered with since issuance.
DigiLocker, the Government of India's official digital document wallet at digilocker.gov.in, also hosts digitally signed academic documents. CBSE, many state boards, and numerous universities have integrated with DigiLocker to push marksheets directly to students' DigiLocker accounts. Documents fetched from a connected issuer in DigiLocker are signed by NIC (National Informatics Centre), the government's primary Certifying Authority.
When you download a marksheet or certificate from DigiLocker, the PDF's digital signature is from NIC CA, not from the institution directly. This NIC signature attests that the document was fetched from the issuer's system at that point in time.
Even outside of NAD and DigiLocker, many universities have begun issuing digitally signed PDFs directly through their own portals. These documents typically use DSCs purchased from licensed CAs such as eMudhra, Sify, or CDAC. The signing officer (Registrar, Controller of Examinations) uses their DSC to sign the issued document. Some universities use automated batch signing pipelines so every marksheet is individually signed at the time of generation.
The challenge for recipients is that these DSCs are not always issued by CAs whose root certificates are pre-installed in Adobe Reader or other common PDF viewers. As a result, even a fully valid, authentic marksheet will display "Signature Validity Unknown" when opened in Adobe Reader on a standard computer.
Adobe Reader and other PDF viewers maintain a list of trusted root certificates. If the certificate chain of the document's signing CA does not lead back to one of these pre-trusted roots, the signature is shown as "Unknown." For Indian government and academic documents, the root is typically the CCA India (Controller of Certifying Authorities) root, which is not on Adobe's Approved Trust List (AATL) by default.
This is a trust configuration issue, not a document problem. The signature may be cryptographically perfect, but Adobe Reader simply does not know whether to trust the signing authority.
VerifySign.in solves this problem by pre-loading the full Indian government certificate trust chain, including the CCA India root, NIC CA, and other major Indian CAs. This means it can verify your marksheet or degree certificate signature correctly without requiring any configuration on your part.
International University Admissions: Foreign universities accepting Indian qualifications via platforms like WES (World Education Services), ICAS, or directly from applicants are increasingly requesting digitally verified documents. A verified digital signature on your marksheet provides cryptographic proof of authenticity that is stronger than a physical stamp.
Domestic Job Applications: Large Indian corporations and MNCs with background verification processes (through KPMG, Acuity, or First Advantage) check academic documents. A verified digital signature expedites and strengthens the verification process.
Government Job Applications: Central and state government recruiters (UPSC, SSC, state PSCs) accept digitally signed documents as valid proofs. Verifying your degree's signature beforehand ensures no rejections at the document verification stage.
Digitally signed marksheets and degree certificates are the future of academic credentialing in India. Whether your document comes from NAD, DigiLocker, or directly from your university, VerifySign.in allows you to verify its authenticity instantly and for free โ giving you confidence and a verifiable proof to share with any institution anywhere in the world.
